Prof. Dr Elka Stefanova, MD, PhD
Professor of Neurology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Belgrade, Serbia, with a clinical and research focus on neurodegenerative disorders, particularly Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and Parkinson’s disease (PD).
She has extensive clinical experience as a specialist in neuropsychiatry, with a particular focus on cognitive disorders and dementia. She has also participated in numerous clinical trials in AD and PD, serving as Principal Investigator and co-investigator.
Prof. Stefanova completed international research fellowships at the Department of Experimental Psychology, University of Cambridge (1997–1998) and the NEUROTEC Department, Karolinska Institutet (2001–2003).
She served as Chair of Neurology at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Belgrade (2015–2021) and has been Head of the Center for Cognitive Disorders and Dementia, Clinic of Neurology, University Clinical Center of Serbia, since 2008.
She has authored approximately 332 scientific publications, including 108 full-length papers in JCR-indexed journals, with publications in Brain, Molecular Psychiatry, Alzheimer’s & Dementia, Neurobiology of Aging, NeuroImage, and Neurogenetics, among others.

Prof. Stefanova is a member of the European Alzheimer’s Disease Consortium (EADC), European Consortium on Dementia with Lewy Bodies (ECDLB), International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society (MDS), and ISTAART. She is a member of the EAN Scientific Panel for Dementia and Cognitive Disorders Management and Co-Chair of the EAN Scientific Panel for Higher Cortical Functions Management Group.
Her scientific contributions have been recognized by the Hemofarm Foundation Excellence Award (2019) and the Annual Award for Scientific Contribution, Faculty of Medicine, University of Belgrade (2020). She has led and participated in numerous national and international research projects in neurology.
She was an author of the National Guidelines for Good Clinical Practice in Alzheimer’s Disease (2013) and is a founding member of the Serbian Alzheimer’s Disease Society (SUAB), supporting patients and caregivers.
